Overview:
the short answer to the above subtitle on celebrating the New Year Holiday for believers is both, scriptural and secular depending on how you do celebrate it.
moreover, scripture shows that God's mercy affords His people a fresh new start any time. not only yearly but daily! and not just by giving up a vice or bad habit but by faith we can enjoy a complete deliverance from them both spiritually and physically.
so while the populous promotes a yearly resolution with this holiday our heavenly father offers us one daily!
The most celebrated secular part of this Holiday isn't even the actual day but the late night evening before the actual day ( january 1st of every year ) peaking at midnight and continuing on throughout the early morning hours. Usually with groups of people celebrating the event with strong drink and food in a party like atmosphere.
a close second to the new year's eve celebrating is the popular "resolution" a self declaration to give up and/or suspend a vice or bad or unhealthy habits such as a particular food, smoking habit and/or any negative social participations.
there is certainly nothing wrong with a resolution to change one's less desirable behaviors once a year. however, it is almost a well accepted fact that most casual new year resolutions end up just fading away before the month of January has even ended.
for believers, a more resolute departure from unwanted behaviors and vices can be sought out in earnest with prayer any day of the year, by reminding ourselves that God is just as willing to help set us free from our vices and bad habits as He did with all our sins.
this not only makes a way for all our sins ( past, present and future ) to be forgiven but to be set free from all curses such as addictions, bad habits and just about any behavior that is not god like in it's practice, as well.
while we still play a role in turning away from them, it can more readily be accomplished through divine repentance and devoting our lives to being christ like by faith in his promise to make a way for us to change...once and for all!.
when we gave/dedicated our lives to Christ by believing on Him alone
for our forgiveness of sins and a life with Him in eternity Romans 10:9 we automatically became elegible to receive all of His many promises. most importantly, those that can complete our repentance from a life of sickness and decease with no power over seemingly unending and ungodly behavior to a life of peace and liberty from it.
and...not just from sin but all the byproducts of it when living outside of a life in christ. that by and through our faith and practice in His word we can achieve the same victory that His grace intended us to have.
the bible is full of people both small and great that were able to turn their lives around using god's grace and mercy as their sole hope for renewal.
one instance of just such hope and renewal can be found in the book of isaiah where god is telling people to:
"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a...
new thing!".
God promises to create new paths and provision, making a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert, symbolizing His ability to bring life and purpose to barren or desolate situations.
It's a call to let go of past failures or hardships and trust God's ongoing work for fresh beginnings and transformation, moving from despair to faith in His ability to overcome impossible circumstances.
Bible scriptures for the New Year often focus on the themes of new beginnings, trusting God's plans, and finding renewed strength for the journey ahead in 2026
